Recently we've been trying to frequent farmers markets here in the city on a regular basis, something we never really did in Denver. It seems to be quite an SF thing: the perfect combination of food-ism*/environmental consciousness (act globally/shop locally).
Its a nice Saturday ritual and I suppose its healthier for us as well (we end up eating more veg). We schlep downtown or down the block with our travel mugs and our canvas Trader Joe's bags, picking up whatever is available that week and then planning around it ("planning"). Its still hard to do any serious cooking during the week, but I like to think we've expanded our options, at least a little bit. Of course we do still keep the Emergency Frozen Pizza on hand.
[*Yeah, this isn't really a word, but you get what I'm going for. There is an intense, pervasive and well-documented interest in food here in SF. With all of the local options - farms, dairies, oysters, wine - it makes sense, but can be a little intimidating. And in spite of all of the artisanal/fresh-roasted options, we find that every once in awhile a cup of 7-11 coffee with about eight of those little flavored creamers (you know, International Flavors?) is the best thing in the world. Ditto those orange nachos you get at basketball games.]
