disco ball @ Mezze restaurant, GR, Michigan - we had coffee here this am
I'm taking a little break, spending a few busy days in Western Michigan to help put up an art show...and also visit friends and family. Its cold here: the kind of cold that makes your breath catch a little when you breathe in deeply. And there was some snow tonight. Not a lot, just enough to make things sparkle-y. Awesome. Having been away from it for a good period of time, I do enjoy this weather.
For the moment being at least, you are still allowed to smoke in bars here (and I think some restaurants have smoking sections). Cigarettes and bars seem like a natural pairing to me, but I certainly don't miss the souvenir of my clothes and hair reeking of smoke. When I first encountered a woman lighting up in a restaurant lounge last night, it took me a second to realize that was something I hadn't seen in a long time.

Who knew brussels sprouts could be so lovely? Hope you all had a great holiday...
*photos from dinner at Ian and Sheena's home. Quite the meal. We are waiting for the debut of their food blog. Soon...very soon...
busy busy bee!
Its one of those weeks where the previous weekend photos aren't going to be posted until Wednesday. Sorry about that. They'll be worth waiting for, I think: boats and lighthouses, fog, rusting things. I'm going to chalk this spate of busy-ness up to Thanksgiving (though we aren't hosting or even cooking - d'oh!). The short work-week is making full-sized demands.
clamoring for more moustache
J's self-portrait, with the look the cool kids can't get enough of. Quite a nice shot, I think.
Feel free to print out and hang above your desk for mustachioed inspiration. And try to use the word "mustachioed" in conversation at least once today.
O is for oh great, oil spill.
Yesterday morning a container ship ran into one of the supports of the Bay Bridge, causing thousands of gallons of fuel to be spilled into the San Francisco Bay. The first reports I heard on the radio said about 400 gallons had been lost, but the real life grand total is 58,000. Apparently the bridge is fine - no damage. Unfortunately, the water, beaches and coastline are a mess, and a lot of birds and animals are getting fatally slimed. And the blob is already on the move, spreading up and down the coast.
The images on the news tonight were pretty bad. I wish there was something we could do; I'd go down and scrub ducks if they'd let us.

Almost.
fantastic...
...weekend: friends, korean food for lunch, walking, nap, coffee, art museum, more walking, open houses, groceries, tv. And brilliant weather.
not much longer now
Well, its been sort of a relentless week. Lots of people under the weather here with a tenacious cold making the rounds. Earthquakes in the news (prepare, don't panic). Generally feeling all week that from the moment I wake up in the morning I'm running 20 minutes behind. On the bright side, J's moustache appears to be surviving post-Halloween - could this look be moving into regular rotation?
I had a short but fun coffee break with Bo this afternoon, and there's more hanging out with friends in the near future. A good knitting project is in the works (!), and the book I've just picked up seems promising. Very much looking forward to the weekend...
Starting the weekend with a motley photo assortment. From top:
- entryway, SF financial district
- 101 South, in transit
- graffiti in Reykjavik, Iceland
- detail from art installation, SF airport BART stop
- jellyfish, Monterey Bay Aquarium/Shu Uemera, Fillmore St. in SF (need false eyelashes?)
- gas station, outskirts of Reykjavik

5.6 earthquake this evening. Couch-rattling.
crisp
The scent of burning leaves is in the air today. I'm wondering if smoke from the fires in southern California is drifting up this way.
After work this evening we trekked to the outer limits of our neighborhood to check out an apartment open house. The listing sounded promising ("large," "victorian," "french doors," "separate entrance"), and as the rent was lower than what we're paying now, we figured it was worth a look. Of course we were hoping for a hidden gem; what we found was a musty, windowless space with doors in weird places. Not large, no closets; also definitely not a 1-bedroom, as advertised. Creative listing, that one. We left reminiscing about the forehead-smacking craziness of finding a place here, very much appreciating our current space.
I'm debating trying to whip up a last-minute Halloween costume to wear on Wednesday. J has groomed himself a moustache (the "Selleck"). I think he thinks that counts as a costume.
or nothing
Its official: I'm out of balance, again.
Too much focus on work. Some of it is self-imposed - taking on more now to carry through the traditionally freelance-lean holiday months. I'm a security girl, can't help that. Some of it is caused by projects that have spilled over their summer timelines, are now creeeeping through fall toward a slow-motion collision of re-positioned deadlines.
Annnyhow, re-aligning priorities and working on getting back to "normal" (whatever that is)...
sunday afternoon in cupertino
Hanging out.
