Happy PARKing Day!
Yesteday was PARKing Day 2010, where for a day (or a few hours) parking spaces around the city become tiny, temporary parks. We ventured out for a late lunch and found people kicking back at a couple of locations in the Financial District and near Union Square. Rumor has it there's a much greater turnout in the Mission (more general hanging out) and SOMA ( a higher concentration of architecture and design firms). Above is Method's mini-park/cornhole court

A couple of weeks ago I passed this storefront in Chinatown with an informal gallery of lenticular cards taped to the inside of the glass. I thought it was so cool and striking, just floating there, images shifting slightly as you passed. I even liked the scotch tape on the window. The door was locked so I peered inside the shop and saw just stacks of boxes and paper; I couldn't tell if it was a business that had closed for good, or if I was just looking in after-hours. I've been meaning to detour back to that block to see if the shop is open and I might acquire a set or two.
(You know what lenticular is even if you think you don't. Lenticular images have a plastic, stripey corduroy-like surface that makes a noise like 'zzzt zzzt zzzt' when you scratch it with your fingernails. The printed picture shifts depending on how you view it - you move it (or your head) back and forth to make the image change.)

versatility modernized
Its been warm in the mornings this week, no sweater necessary, which makes the walk to work especially nice. Rolling through North Beach in the a.m. inspires cafe envy, and I tell myself I'll start getting up earlier so that I can leisurely sit outside with beverage before work. So far no luck. I trip up on the 'getting up earlier' part. Will keep trying.
