Commemorating Steve Jobs at the Stockton St. Apple store in San Francisco, Thursday night: Post-It notes and pens were left out, and a lot of people seemed to take advantage of them to add their own contributions. There were also many overheard conversations about first experiences with a mac, and how inspired people were -and are- by S.J.

...the commuters and the tourists on the sidewalks are the denizens of Cafe Zoetrope's happy hour. Also, Francis Ford Coppola has a new film coming out. Guess what its called. (Not as much a non-sequitur as it seems.)
Rock show, school night
Diamond Rings, opening for Twin Shadow. Synth-y goodness.
your hosts for the evening's convocatoria
Killing time before a lecture a couple of weekends ago, we wandered over to an art exhibit across the street and literally ran into a nude couple in the building's very small elevator. In the course of some very *focused* conversation during our ride to the 3rd floor, we learned they were rehearsing for a performance by La Pocha Nostra, a non-profit performance collective based in the Mission in SF. We returned that evening to see the group in action. Click here to view Jaeha Yoo's Performance video. Note -- brief nudity starting around 1:20.

6:30am Sunday morning, blue lanterns at the finish line of the SF marathon (just south of the Ferry Building, Bay Bridge in the background). The last wave of the (1st) half marathon took off in the opposite direction shortly after this photo.

Belmont Park, Pacific Beach, CA. The first strains of this song make my knees weak. Also, I love the lo-fi-ness of the 'official' video on You Tube.
summer of tempera paint and magic realism
Unidentified band performing at the Capsule Design Festival in Hayes Valley last month. (Anyone know who they are?) *Love this.*

when in highland park
If you're in the neighborhood (Los Angeles), drop by the Kristi Engle Gallery and check out painter Ed Johnson's show, "Devil Among the Tailors." (Through May 28.) Coffee and/or cocktails a few steps from the gallery (in opposite directions), so you could make an afternoon of it.
Kristi Engle Gallery 5002 York Ave. Highland Park, CA Thursday, Friday, and Saturday: 12 to 6 pm or by appointment
UPDATE Here are a couple of reviews of Ed's show and further info about his work..

Shiny and exuberant in their parallel-park-ed-ness.
components
A sign of spring: cocktail ingredients at Rickhouse on Kearny. (All of these are local and in-season somewhere, right?) Basil on the left there, slightly crushed. Could someone please capture and bottle this into a perfume...?! Pretty sure I wouldn't be the only taker. (Does such a thing exist and I just don't know about it?)

"Everyone likes change in the abstract...
...but change in the concrete is hard. It's tough." (President Obama) The handful of images posted here are from President Obama's fundraising rally in San Francisco Wednesday evening.
From the top:
- Waiting in line at will-call for tickets Tuesday evening.
- Attendees (in the cheap/er seats) had an impromptu dinner of nachos (the vegetarian option?) and sloppy joes at the Nob Hill Masonic Center before the event.
- Jerry Rice said a few words, and flashed his Super Bowl ring.
- Performance by singer Goapele.
- President Obama spoke for about half an hour.
- This gentleman was the sign-language interpreter for the President's speech.
- I feel like the people in this shot should be wearing 3D glasses.

A break in the clouds has brought us a short episode of summery weather. We've busted out the sandals, and will stay up late, sitting outside and smoking cigarettes, as long as the evenings are warm.
Back to regularly scheduled rain and tall boots this weekend.
